Top 5 Things NOT to do in Thailand

1. Criticize the King or Thai Government

As a guest in their country respect is paramount. It is not your country and therefore the countries internal affairs are none of your business. Most of the Thai people love the monarchy and will not take kindly to disrespect of their King. This is an offense for which you can actually be jailed. Anything with the King's picture on it is considered sacred. This includes money. If you drop money and it blows away don't stomp on it with your feet to stop it. Also it goes without saying that you should not get involved in protests against the government as a foreigner either.

2. Touch any person you do not know extremely well on the head.

The head is considered to be the highest part of the body and is considered to be especially intimate to Thai people. Touching a Thai person on the head will not be well received.

3. Gesturing or touching things or people with your feet.

The feet are considered to be the lowest part of your body and it is interpreted as an insult to touch things or point with you feet. If you do so, this may not be received kindly. Also use care and notice not to enter establishments where you are expected to remove your shoes. You will be clued into this by the site of various pairs of shoes outside the door. As a tourist you will most likely encounter this in massage shops.

4. Do not become overly intoxicated in Thailand; especially if you are alone.

As with anywhere else in the world if a person is so very drunk that they cannot handle or conduct themselves in an orderly manner, they are asking for trouble. As a tourist you are more likely to be taken advantage of or outright robbed if you are perceived as so drunk that you cannot handle yourself. Ladies, I think you understand the consequences of this as well. Also if you are with a group in Thailand and become intoxicated it can be easy for you to become separated in a big crowd. Also, don't do drugs in Thailand...punishments can be very strict.

5. Use care with renting anything in Thailand; especially jet-skis!

Be sure to take good phone pictures and video before leaving the establish where you are renting from. This goes for motorbikes and is especially true for jet-skis. In fact, the scam over renting jet-skis and then charging outrageous prices for preexisting damage has become legendary. Many I know claim this is so bad that they refuse to rent jet-skis in Thailand.
